Overview

Dollarmax needed a modern, conversion-focused website that positioned the brand as a local alternative to big-box retailers—while still communicating value, trust, and constantly rotating inventory. The goal was to create a lightweight marketing site that could both inform and drive in-store and online engagement.

Our Role

We led the design and execution end-to-end, including:

  • UX and UI design

  • Visual and graphic direction

  • Marketing content structure

  • Custom graphics and promotional assets

  • Video sourcing and editing for key sections

The Challenge

Dollarmax operates in a category that often feels cluttered, inconsistent, and overly transactional. The website needed to:

  • Elevate perceived value without losing the discount positioning

  • Clearly communicate the variety of inventory

  • Build trust with local customers

  • Support both physical store traffic and online browsing

Approach

1. Establishing a Clear Value Proposition
We structured the hero section to immediately communicate:

  • What the business offers (big box store items)

  • Why it matters (discounted pricing)

  • Where customers can engage (in-store and online)

The layout balances clarity with strong visual hierarchy to quickly orient users.

2. Building a Cohesive Visual System
We developed a lightweight graphic system to create consistency and elevate the brand:

  • Subtle wave patterns to introduce motion and break up sections

  • Strategic color blocking to guide users through the page

  • Card-based layouts to improve scannability

This approach helped shift the experience away from a “discount bin” feel toward something more curated and intentional.

3. Integrating Video & Real-World Imagery
To make the experience more tangible, we incorporated:

  • In-store product photography

  • Contextual product visuals

  • Video elements that showcase inventory in a real environment

This reduces uncertainty and allows users to quickly understand the type and quality of products available.

4. Reinforcing Trust Through Content
We focused on credibility by highlighting:

  • Customer testimonials

  • Real store imagery

  • Clear and accessible location details

For a local-first business, establishing trust early is critical to driving foot traffic.

5. Supporting Dual Conversion Paths
The website was designed to support two primary actions:

  • Visiting a physical store

  • Browsing and purchasing online

We made both paths clear without creating friction:

  • Location sections for local intent

  • Direct links to marketplace platforms (Facebook, Amazon, eBay)

Outcome

The final experience:

  • Elevates the perception of a discount retail brand

  • Clearly communicates value without overwhelming users

  • Builds trust through authentic visuals and messaging

  • Supports both in-store visits and online engagement

Key Takeaways

  • Thoughtful visual design can significantly elevate perceived value, even in price-driven markets

  • Combining graphic systems with real-world imagery creates a more trustworthy and engaging experience

  • Simple motion and video elements can add depth without increasing complexity
